MOIA, autonomous ridepooling becomes reality with ID. Buzz AD
A future in which self-driving vehicles are an integral part of our daily lives, improving urban mobility and reducing environmental impact: this is the vision of MOIA, Volkswagen Group's tech company. A vision that becomes tangible with Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD.
This autonomous vehicle, designed specifically for on-demand mobility, represents a significant step toward more efficient and sustainable public transportation. With the goal of bringing autonomous ridepooling to the road by 2027, MOIA has already started intensive testing in Hamburg using Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD equipped with an advanced Level 4 autonomous driving system developed by Mobileye.
Technology, accessibility, comfort
ID. Buzz AD is based on the Volkswagen ID model. Buzz, with an elongated wheelbase and raised roofline, specifically for use in fully autonomous mobility services. The vehicle offers four individual seats and ample luggage space, with separate compartments in both the front and trunk.
The booking process is simple and intuitive, and access to the vehicle is via smartphone or PIN keypad: the doors open and close automatically. Inside, the ID. Buzz AD maintains MOIA's high standards of comfort, with yellow seat belts and grab handles for visual guidance, tactile elements, Braille labeling, and seat-side control buttons to ensure accessibility for all passengers.
Safety and Innovation
Safety is a priority: equipped with 13 cameras, 9 laser scanners (LiDAR) and 5 radar sensors, Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD generates a comprehensive and redundant image of the surrounding environment. This, in combination with accurate map data, intelligent route planning and cloud-based system updates, enables safe and seamless operation in urban traffic.
The autonomous driving system was developed by Mobileye, one of the world's leading specialists in driver assistance and autonomous driving technologies. In line with legal requirements, the Level 4 self-driving ridepooling vehicle includes redundant systems for braking, steering, and energy supply.
ID. Buzz AD made its debut at the UITP 2025 summit in Hamburg, one of the world's leading events for local public transport, marking a significant step toward large-scale implementation of autonomous ridepooling.
